What's New in Mattresses

Coil beds, Foam beds, Air beds, and Adjustable beds are giving people the best sleep of their lives. Also, new technology in padding layers, including Memory Foam (also called NASA Foam) and Talalay Latex Foam are providing sleep surfaces that reduce pressure points and promote capillary blood flow and are giving new meaning to the term great night's sleep.

The middle of a mattress (called the core) used to be a coil spring, exclusively. Now, you'll find solid chunks of foam or air chambers as substitutes. Foam is an improvement over a standard coil because there is no side to side motion that can cause a person to lose sleep because his/her partner is moving during the night. A quality foam core will also last longer than a coil because it is a man-made thermoplastic that will not lose its shape. Coils, on the other hand, will lose their 'tempering,' or their ability to bounce back over time.

Air Beds are a popular choice these days. Select Comfort has championed its air bed as best for all around sleep, but we beg to differ. For those stomach sleepers or people with a history of back pain, air mattresses can be treacherous. For example, when air bed chambers are fully inflated, they provide the needed support. As soon as air is released from the chamber, the heaviest part of our body (the center) goes down first, thereby compromising good posture. If you cannot take advantage of the firmness variability of an air bed, we recommend a mattress with a foam core that has comfort layers, including Memory Foam or Latex foam.
